Today, Cobra makes some of the most popular radar detectors on the market. I wonder, how do they do it? Well, these line of Cobras have a very nice curvy style, very sexy… Indeed. The Cobra ESD-9110CS is the base model, and retails with a $105 MSRP. However, it can be bought well below $100 on the internet. For such a price, it definitely looks better than a Uniden… And wow, it looks much better than most detectors in general. So, how does it perform?

A buddy of mine bought a whistler 1655 a month ago and seemed to be pretty thrilled with it. My current radar detector (a whistler 1125) had been a very accurate and reliable device for over 8 years and I decided it was about time to get a new one. Having had great luck with my previous Whistler and having seen first hand the features of the 1655 I decided to buy it. Big Mistake.

In the quest for a new radar detector to replace my fiance’s aging Escort Passport 6800, I have developed a sort of fetish for test-driving these devices. I have been in law enforcement and thus not in need of a radar detector for several years, and now being someone who has “seen things from both sides of the radar gun” so to speak, I am intrigued by what I have learned about radar detection and the behavior of the average small town department’s radar units.
I will keep this short but sweet. I borrowed a friend’s Whistler DE1655 for a couple days a week the last few weeks to see how it performs. It is a modern unit purchased about six months ago at a local discount store. It is compact and easy to mount using a suction-cup affair. The display consists of LEDs with nonilluminated labels for each LED printed on the detector body itself.
All bells and whistles aside, I was mainly interested in the distance at which this detector could detect signals. From an un-scientific point of view, this device generally gave adequate warning to get the vehicle slowed down before the officer operating the radar could have obtained a sure reading. However, I warn the potential buyer that I can easily see this machine not providing enough warning time if traveling on an open highway at a high rate of speed. At 40MPH in a town this is a good detector for the average Joe who travels a few MPH above the speed limit; at 90MPH on a freeway it’s a different story– you had better hope the Doppler effect is in your favor and you receive warnings as the officer “zaps” the cars in front of you. On X band, which is rarely used here in suburban Massachusetts, the detector provided roughly half a mile of detection range at about 40MPH, certainly enough time for a cautious driver to slow down if the speed limit was 30 or 35MPH. On K and Ka bands, the detector only really lit up with more than one signal strength light when the radar was in sight– too late to do much except prepare to talk one’s way out of a citation. Let me review that comment again– the device did provide some warning in what was probably enough time to slow for a K or Ka signal, however even the slightest reaction of one signal strength light must be regarded as the vehicle fast approaching the radar source. I was unable to test this against lidar as its use is still in infancy here.
I found that this detector was activated by X and K band alarm sensors on local businesses, but to a much lesser extent than cheaper modern detectors that I have seen recently.

The Bel Express 930 is the high-end model in the “Express” series of detectors from Beltronics. They are below the Vector series when it comes to performance and features. Seeing some of the Express models at Circuit City, I was very tempted to give them a try. I purchased the Bel Express 930 and the Bel Express 920 at the time, and later returned them. Here’s what I found.

Before I purchased a Bel 945, I thought that my Cobra 1010 was a very good detector. Now I have to say that the 1010 is not nearly as good as I once thought it was. Contrary to the comments previously posted, I found the Cobra to feel cheaply constructed, and to lack features commonly found on other low end detectors. For instance, a $100 PNI that will operate both corded and cordless will include two different cords, and will provide the same performance in a smaller package.

This, basically, is a Radar Dectector like any other quality detector. Comes with all the bells and whistles (pun intended). Scans all bands (X, K, Ka) and Laser. Its programmable as all are, and you can set it up to your liking (brightness and loudness). Highway mode is very sensitive (found this out quickly when driving through the city), and the City Mode barely makes a chirp until being tagged by the real thing.

I recently purchased this detector after extensively researching it’s abilities and weaknesses. Here’s my opinion:
- I already own an Escort 8500, so I have an excellent detector benchmark to compare it to. I purchased the S2 because I was reluctant to run a hard-wire up the A-pillar in my Audi so I could discretely mount a detector above the rearview mirror (due to the side curtain airbags).
- Rangewise, The S2’s has a little less than the 8500. On a recent 700 mile trip to Atlanta, the S2 would pick up K-band construction site speed boxes at a distance of 1.3 - 1.5 miles (over small rises and around corners). The 8500 would pick up the same boxes about 2 miles out (on a previous trip). On Ka, the S2 picked up HP cars about 1.5 miles away on straightaways. The 8500 was good for at least 1.75 miles. On laser, they are about equal…giving you ample time to slow down and accept your speeding ticket.
- On selectivity, the S2 seems to false less than the 8500…this is both a good and bad thing. When the S2 hits, more than likely it’s not a false alarm. But, it does not hit on the same supermarket door openers the 8500 used to…sometimes you wonder if the S2 is actually working.
- Overall, I was impressed with it’s abilities, especially given the fact the S2 is cordless. I actually prefer the S2’s LCD readout, the warning chimes, and appearance when compared to the 8500. Contrary to other opinion’s I have read, the S2 does not eat batteries. One set is good for at least a month of daily driving as long as you remember to shut it down when you park your car.
- Bottom line: If you are a hardcore speeder, buy an 8500 for it’s superior range. Otherwise, the S2 is an excellent detector.

————————-Introduction————————–
The Whistler XTR-330 radar detector is a striking unit–about average for size in this category-but smartly adorned in dual-tone gray-on-black, with silver buttons. It comes with a straight power cord (with a replaceable 2-amp fuse) and suction cup mount. I decided to pay $20 more and upgrade to this one, after a good experience with my Whistler XTR-140 detector–my last detector had speech capabilities, and I really missed it. Well, this unit has that, and quite a bit more!
