The Solo 5110 cordless radar detector has been in both my cars for about 6 months now. You can program this thing to suit your tastes in the areas of volume, automute, 4 brightness settings, 5 radar sensitivity settings, start-up mode, different sounds, safety pilot warnings. It’s audio warnings are very clear as to what band is being detected and determining how close you are to smokey. You don’t need to look at your detector to figure out what’s going on. With it’s Automute feature the unit quiets down after 4 seconds so your warnings aren’t annoying. It’s easy to take down and hide from prying eyes. It has a front mounted on-off volume control which is rare to find these days and very easy to use. Great windshield mount, easy to use. If you so choose you can run it using an optional power cord. This unit all but never falses. Well written owners manual. I had to send the unit in once for a problem and not only did they fix the problem but they included an extra set of batteries, an extra windshield mount and they replaced a cosmetic item all at no charge. One week turnaround also. The only downside to this detector is it’s Ka band detection, which for me is acceptable in an urban environment, might not be on a rural/interstate scenario. When driving on the highway where Ka can find you with little warning I would use the cord option because the unit’s overall sensitivity is increased somewhat with it. Decent battery life. Reasonable construction. Once you get used to the cordless convenience you’ll never go back.

I’ve been using radar detectors for about 10 years now and have purchased quite a few different brands along the way. But I’ve never become attached to any one model because none of them were perfect. I’ve had problems with getting tons of false positives as well as some detectors not picking up true positives at all, which of course has led to hundreds of dollars worth of tickets when I was supposed to be protected. So I decided to go ahead an spend the money on the Escort 9500i.

The Whistler Corporation, now know as the Whistler Group, has been in the business of detection for little more than two decades. Previous models were simple easy to understand beeping with A bright light flashing in the corner of your eye. With the old CEO out of the picture (redeveloper of Fuzzbuster), the now Whistler Group is developing various featured detectors to catch the Wide Detector Groups.

I had bought this detector back in 2001 in which at 1st worked great for me. It would detect cops in K band a mile away. It had saved me a few times but many times it didn’t. I had a bright red 2002 Mitsu Eclipse that just seemed to not be able to pull off the shoulder. Keep in mind that the detector was about a year old at this time. Well one day I was out doing about 90 with me and my sis through a 55. It was night and I wasn’t sure if the lights comming over the hill were going to be a cop so I slowed down to 70…still showing all clear on my detector I thought everything was fine until about 20 feet it gives me a 3 level warining. I was like oh $hit. Needless to say I got pulled over in my own driveway. After that I never relied on my cobra for anything besides the compass. Funny thing it worked great the 1st year. I’m not sure if it was because it was in different cars is what made the performance of the model go down. 1st car Chevy Lumina (moma’s
2nd Mazda MX-3 (1st real car) and 3rd was my new Eclipse. Although I had had to peel off the cobra my 1st 2 cars when they had been wrecked (not my flaut on both I might add…no really
Well by Summer of 2002 I almost threw it out the window if my girlfriend hadn’t of stopped me. If the reason why the cobra quit working was because of the advancment of speed measureing devices then I’d say don’t DOn’t buy this one because you’ll have over $800 worth of tickets by the time you realize it was a mistake. I’ve just bought a Escort 8500 X50 BLUE so I’ll be updating bout that one later. Seems to me you get what you pay for.

The Escort name has been around for over 20 years. They have dominated the detector market with the Original Escort, Escort Passport, and late 80s Solo. After one of the founders had departed from the company (Mike Valentine) the company hasn’t produced a top-notch detector. Now with the merger (Bought out of Beltronics) the company is now back on track with a strong detector.
In the Title not quite a Vette: I would call the Valentine a Vette (factory), the Escort a Camaro (factory), and the Bel 980/970 a Firebird (factory). If you follow cars a Camaro and Firebird are similar with the Frame, Motor and Gauges. The difference is outside appearance and packaging, but give strong performance. The Vette “Valentine” give little more all around performance.

The Cobra ESD-6060 is about as cheap as they come, well atleast for Cobra. The more expensive ESD series detectors all prove themselves nearly worthless, but how does the dramatically cheaper and different looking model compare? The Cobra ESD-6060 can be found for around $50 in some stores, and can be purchased for even less. I decided to get a hold of one and see how it stacks up as a radar detector. Here’s what I found with it.
