Before I purchased a Bel 945, I thought that my Cobra 1010 was a very good detector. Now I have to say that the 1010 is not nearly as good as I once thought it was. Contrary to the comments previously posted, I found the Cobra to feel cheaply constructed, and to lack features commonly found on other low end detectors. For instance, a $100 PNI that will operate both corded and cordless will include two different cords, and will provide the same performance in a smaller package.

I don’t remember what I paid for my 1010, so tried to find out what they are going for these days. I found that the list price for this detector is approx. $289. Of course you can find it cheaper, but prices I found ranged from just under $100 to almost $200. Therefore I found it difficult to decide if the 1010 could be compared to a $160 Bel, but I did so anyway.

In all aspects, the Bel outperformed the 1010. This was clearly evident w/Ka, where the Bel was detecting at much greater ranges. Yes, the Cobra did detect Ka at ranges that still gave me time to react, but having that extra measure of distance the Bel gave is very nice to have. The Bel also falses a *lot* less than the 1010 as well.

The 1010 is easy to use, mostly because it doesn’t have a lot of features to learn about. Sound level and display brightness levels are fine, and I did like having four levels of light output. My one complaint about the features is that the auto-mute kicks in too quickly. After a few warning beeps, the sound goes into auto-mute. Since I normally have music playing as I drive, I now have to take my eyes off the road to see if I am still getting a signal. The 1010 comes with one coiled cord only, which could have been a little longer.

My feeling is that the 1010 is a mid-pack performer at best, which actually would be fine as long as you don’t spend more than $90-$100 for it. However, you “road warriors” should consider spending a bit more and look elsewhere (Bel or Escort).
