The Whistler Corporation, now know as the Whistler Group, has been in the business of detection for little more than two decades. Previous models were simple easy to understand beeping with A bright light flashing in the corner of your eye. With the old CEO out of the picture (redeveloper of Fuzzbuster), the now Whistler Group is developing various featured detectors to catch the Wide Detector Groups.

Whistler like many of the “other” detector makers, design feature packed boxes and lack the high detection need for today”s driver market. Though performance is the high key to many of us users, features are nice additives. Voice Alerts, Compass, Text display, Memo Record, etc. etc… One maker tries to get the extra edge over the other for the profits and market leader.

With above said, again whistler has developed the 1600 series and the 1700 series within 2 years. The detectors are said to support the same detection range starting from the entry levels 1605- 1675 and 1710-1790. The Special Editions models, are supposedly are units that promote “newer, better detection” over the lower models of that series.

The unit at hand is the Whistler 1675 Compass model. This unit incorporates a red text display that was first debuted on the Whistler 1490. The antenna is said to be from the Whistler 1595se, that was improved over the 1585 and earlier models. The unit is sold either as graphite gray or the Millennium Silver “Talladega Racing Series.” This series of Whistler detectors has flip flopped their design from the previous 1500 series detectors. The 1675 unit still uses five similar used buttons on top of the higher models of Whistler“s detectors. The Windshield and Visor brackets are the same from the previous 1400 series, when included.

The 1675 uses the standard alert functions, visual and audio. The Visual function is again through a red text display. The display presents Highway, City, City 1, and City 2. The unit also included the Compass feature, a degree indicator of 0 -355 degrees with 5 degree increments and N,NE,E, SE etc.. The 1675 can either operate with both a compass and detector, or as a detector or compass only. The detector also displays SWS Alerts, where available, and Safety Alerts when a emergency vehicle or government utilizes this technology.

The Audio is clear and loud, though the unit is programmed with poor alerts sounds. It is has a 3 Tone selection, the alerts for radar bands change in series of user selection. The disappointment in the alerts would be that X and Ka have a similar in sound with 84-88 dBLs. In addition the alerts for K and Ka can be more alarming with threat, not wimpy. The Laser alert is ear catching, at about 89 dBLs. The SWS/Safety Alerts do provide an audio tone that easily alerts the operator.

Mounting the 1675 can be done via a visor mount (separate purchase), windshield mount, or dash mount. The Visor mount can be ordered through Whistler for the State of Montana/Michigan that outlawed anything of the Windshield. The windshield mount is sturdy for the detector. The suction cups work well, but you need to easy on them when taking the suction cup off (they can rip easily.) The dash mount uses velco, which I would not use. If you choose to put the detector on the dash, op to go to Wal-mart or auto parts place and get tool liner none slip padding.

The operations of the City modes are beneficial to a driver. The “CITY” mode, all radar bands are registered with two alerts and muted till the threat is over. In “CITY 1″ mode, the X band is reduced sensitivity is reduced (Lower Detection range.) In “CITY 2″ mode, X band is eliminated from detection. Though when selected, when X band is detected for the first time of selection, the detector alerts you with two beeps then X band is not detector there after until unit is cycled in power or mode selected. As for “HIGHWAY” the standard detection is not altered in anyway. “Automute” is another feature that is added for driver, though really is not needed if you operated the detector in one of City modes.

As for the detection, the unit is on par with the average detector maker. The Uniden 900/700 class and Cobra 6000/9000 class, the whistler performs a little better. As for the Lower Beltronics” series and Escort“s 6800 and 7500, the Whistler is comparable. As with any Driving scenario, City and Highway driving is not the same in detection. City driving reduces range due to builds, houses, and more vehicles.

The Number So Far for Range:

X band- 0.6 city; 1+ highway

K band- 0.4 city; 0.6-1.3 highway

Ka band 34.7- 0.3-.5 city; 0.5-0.8 highway

The Ka numbers were detected rounding a corner in city, and the Highway was on a slight hill/bend.
