I tend to drive on the high side of the speed limit, so I eventually required a radar detector. I wanted something cordless so I didn”t have wires dangling in front of me and so I could quickly conceal it from prying eyes and local law enforcement figures. Fortunately, I didn”t meet any new friends on the highway thanks to the performance of the BEL 946. The sensitivity on the unit was great, easily detecting speed traps on the highway from a useful distance away. Around town, if a policeman left his radar gun on, I could see it well before he saw me.

The BEL 946 packs an impressive list of features. There are the prerequisite dark and mute modes, as well as highway and city modes. The city mode is particularly good at filtering out traffic lights while still detecting radar transmissions. It also detects X, K, and Ka radar bands, as well as laser. Also, being a cordless radar detector, it shuts itself off after an hour of inactivity, giving an audio warning beforehand.

The only problem I”ve had with the BEL 946 is that it is rather late in giving low-battery warnings. When the low battery sound finally starts chirping, you”ve probably gone about 3 days with no advanced warning of law enforcement. Other than that, it”s an excellent unit. The buttons are well placed and ergonomic, the display is easy to read, and the sounds are easily distinguished.
