I’ve had this detector for almost 3 months now, and honestly, I can’t see why everyone dislikes it so much. It seems to be a capable detector for a decent price. Detects all bands of radar, plus laser and strobe. Has voice alert, is loud, and has a clear display. This seems to work pretty well honestly. I’ve never had an encounter with X band here, so I can’t comment on that. K band range seems decent. While it may not have the best bragging rights for range, it allows ample time to slow from 15-20 mph over in most situations. Ka band range actually seems pretty good, although you can’t trust the signal strength meter, it will sometimes jump up very quickly.
This detector has the capability to put the alert on the strongest signal. This means that if there is two signals being detected on two different bands (say, an X band flase alert from a door opener and a K band radar gun) the detector will report the strongest one.
The POP detection on this detector DOES work. Just be warned that POP detection is off by default, see the manual for how to enable it.
Voice alert is kind of cool at first, but gets old fast. Once I learned the alert tones, which by the way are very distinctive, I turned voice alert off. The detector is plenty loud, several steps above the cobra 9210 that I once had. The display is readable even in very bright sunlight and is visable from any angle, even when mounted at the top of the glass. The controls are simple and the buttons are large. The cord and windshield mount seem to be of acceptable quality. The detector does flap around on rough roads, but the suction cups stay put quite well, even in heat and cold.
Now to the cons- Laser detection seems pretty much worthless, but then, most detectors are worthless for laser detection. Voice alerts are a bit distorted. K band range to the rear is a little lacking. There is a little more flasing than I would like, but then, I have it on the lowest city mode, so that may be part of the reason.
Overall, i’ve been happy with my purchase, and it’s paid for itself a few times in the 3 months that I’ve owned it. Speedzones.com’s 2003 reviews include the 9870, and I have found their review to hit the nail on the head. Overall, I think I got a good deal for what I paid, and the detector seems to perform exactly as I expected, if not a little better.
