Whistler PRO73 Radar Detector w/ POP Whistler Radar Detector featuring POPTM Mode Detection, Total Band Protection, Three City Modes, Intense Blue Text Display, Details: ...
I bought this radar detector a year ago for a trip I was making from LA to Berkley. I bought it from Caplink for $128 plus shipping (I needed it asap). On the trip it did pick up most of the cops that I saw, but in most of the cases I had to see them before it picked them up, I also got a lot of false X band alerts-so much so I turned off the voice or would mute the detector once it started its incesant beeping. If there was a truck nearby it went off!
Since then I have used it on my trips to vegas, same results, I usually see the cop just as it is going off, my speed is usually in the 70s so I have had a chance to slow down, if I was driving anything above that I would have a ticket with this unit. I also had a lot of false x bands, usally when I am near a truck-thought they werent supposed to have radar detectors?? The safety alert is useless, it hasnt gone off once. That was one of the selling points for me, but I didnt research it enough to find out that the safety system has to have a transmitter that costs around 1K, so how many cities do you know that have that kind of extra money to put one in each vehicle?
If you are in the market for a good radar detector I would sugguest a valantine 1, its a lot more expensive $400 but how much is a ticket? That will be my next radar detector and I think this one will go up on e-bay. If you only drive short highway distances and never over 65 buy the whistler, if you plan on driving any long distance buy the valantine, oh, the valentine is upgradable so it is never obsolite, this one isnt. It also has 2 sensing devices, this one doesnt, it also lets you know which direction the radar is coming from and how many, this one doesnt. Its sad, but in the world of radar detectors you get what you pay for. Like I said, its not bad, its a fair unit, but with the cost of the ticket, insurance premium increase, and this unit you would have paid for that valantine and then some.
