Your New Best Friend Cobra ESD 9550 Radar Detector I bought this Radar Detector after reading the ad in my car and driver. It looked like something that might compl...
It’s a little larger than I’m used to in a detector, but it is still workable for a truck or SUV. It has a blue backlit display with a black text LCD. The silver accents and chrome plastic buttons are a nice touch. I purchased this unit from buyradardetectors.com after a semi-favorable review on several sites.
Driving around town, it picks up the X-band signals that my old detector did. It is consistent with signal strength. My route to work and back is identical, and each time the signal strength is similar for the same culprits.
Most of our local yokels use K, and county/state use Ka here, and I’ve had an opportunity for it to detect both. Laser is only in use for speed traps here, and I’ve yet to encounter one, so I can’t give an accurate view on Laser.
This model looks good, and seems to work OK, but I have one complaint. The alarm volume, even at its highest setting of 7, isn’t even loud enough to wake a sleeping child even if there’s nothing else going on. At first I thought perhaps it was the fact it’s running on batteries, so I plugged it in. Still not very loud. It just doesn’t have the ear-piercing punch necessary to get your attention if, say, you have the window down or the radio on. I’m not sure if this is limited to the one I got or not, but sheesh. I’m used to a radar detector breaking your eardrums to get your attention to slow it down!
One odd feature it does have: A “Wakeup alarm” which is only slightly louder than the alerts, will sound an alarm every so often to keep you awake. This only works if you prefer waking up to an alarm rather than the radio, because you couldn’t hear it if the radio is on.
Sensitivities: Highway/City/City Low X/City No X.
Bands: X, K, KA, Laser.
Detections: VG2, POP, and Safety/Hazards.
It also has a variable auto power off, so it will shut down after 1 or 2 hours to save the battery.
Lastly, it comes with a free battery charger and some long life rechargable NiMH AA batteries. It’s useful just to have an extra AA charger around, because I use the same batteries in lots of other devices.
Overall, not bad, but I think the main selling point here is the ability to go cordless. Don’t buy it on looks or sensitivity alone, because you may be disappointed.
UPDATE:
I’m now getting aggravated with this junky thing. It shuts off to conserve battery even when it’s plugged in to the cigarette lighter tether charger. After about an hour of continuous use, it just freezes. It gets very hot in the sun, and it won’t let you turn it on or off. It takes removing the batteries to get the unit to function again. I’m contacting Whistler to see if they can get me a new one. If the issues I have can’t be corrected, I’m never buying another whistler.
