K40 is known for making some of the most famous remote systems that are completely hidden using their pod technology. My “expensive” experience with the K40 1000P’s big brother was good since it is the only high-performance remote system that offers a rear-antenna, which can make all of the difference in the world. The K40 1000P is identical to the K40 2000P except that it lacks the rear-antenna. Here’s what I found with this hidden system.
-Price-
*Depending on where you go, I’ve seen the K40 1000P going for $700 to $800. That’s cheaper compared to the K40 2000P and the newer Bel RX75. The Escort SR7 is supposedly more expensive according to MSRP, but is actually much cheaper. If you go on eBay, you can find the Escort SR7 radar detector bundled with the highly effective Escort ZR3 laser shifter for about $800. If you’re not entirely set on making a completely hidden system and just want something that’s integrated, then the K40 1000P is a complete rip-off compared to the competition from Escort. One of the largest flaws of the K40 remote systems is that they lack any laser protection. Yes, laser attacks are rarer than your typical radar attack, but they can be the most lethal. Once you’re hit, you’re practically a goner, you’re clocked… If you have cheap countermeasures such as a plate cover and other things, a laser alert can give you a couple of seconds to slow down. But that’s about it. Plus, when a detector is a few hundred dollars, wouldn’t you expect laser protection? The cheapest $30 detectors offer laser sensors. How about the cheapest remote? The Whistler DE-3400 offers laser protection at under $200! So you might say to yourself, “K40 is still good, and why would I need a laser alert since I’m already a goner once I’m hit?” Good question, the Escort SR7 detects laser as a stand-alone without the Escort ZR3. However, when bundled with the Escort ZR3 laser shifter via shift-link, you don’t just get laser alerts, but you also jam the damn thing! Now that’s priceless, and that can save you thousands of dollars. But wait, you can hook the K40 1000P up with the K40 Defuser Plus at $299 which gives you laser alerts, but doesn’t have as great of a jamming ability as the Escort ZR3 does. All that it requires you to do is pay the same price or a little more for the bundle versus the K40 1000P. If you don’t need something invisible (You live outside Virginia and DC), then go with the Escort duo.
-Performance-
*The K40 1000P performs the same as the K40 2000P, except it’s blind in the back. That’s the main difference between the detectors, and that’s what makes it completely inferior. So as long as we’re talking about performance from the front, it’s easily compared to the Escort SR7. They both provide just about the same protection. I wasn’t able to use them in the same car since you can only test one remote in a car at a time! When it comes to K-Band performance, the K40 1000P definitely gives enough time to slow down before you ever see the cop. The Ka-Band performance is also superb, where you can slow down before you ever see the cop. This is what a high-end detector is supposed to do. However, whatever the K40 1000P can do, the Escort SR7 can do better, especially if it’s linked to the Escort ZR3. With the K40 1000P, you’re completely blind to laser unless you connect it to a K40 Defuser Plus or a stand-alone laser jamming system, both which will push this entire system above the $1,000 mark. The Escort SR7 + Escort ZR3 will both pick-up and jam the laser for about the same price or a little more compared to the K40 1000P. I liked the K40 2000P since it has a rear-antenna, which no other high-end remote unit was able to offer. Without it, the K40 1000P is left in the dust. Even though it does have great performance, it costs much more than the Escort SR7 + Escort ZR3 duo which will completely out-do it when it comes to performance, and especially laser which can screw you over easily.
-Ease of Use %26 Features-
*The K40 1000P is a bare-bones system that uses tiny red LED pods to give you a visual on the threats. Then you have a piezo speaker mounted in the cockit which gives audio alerts. The audio alerts are loud and clear. The thing that I don’t like is that you don’t have any control over the detector. The K40 1000P auto quiets it alerts automatically, so you don’t have control over muting it. Since the K40 1000P is entirely integrated into your car, you don’t have to do anything. You can be the biggest technologically illiterate person and easily use the K40 1000P. The K40 1000P should be professionally installed.
-The Verdict-
*The K40 1000P does offer good radar sensitivity in the front. However, without the rear-antenna that’s offered on the more expensive K40 2000P, and also it lacks any laser detection unless you buy the K40 Defuser Plus or any stand-alone laser jammer, the K40 1000P falls to being nearly worthless. It’s only worthwhile if you live in a state where detectors are illegal such as Virginia and DC. Also it’s only worthwhile if you really want the visual alerts from the lights to be directly in your gauges. If you want about the same radar sensitivity and laser detection/jamming, you can get the Escort SR7 + Escort ZR3 duo which costs about the same or a little more, but a significantly better buy than the K40 1000P.
Here’s some information on the more expensive K40 2000P.
