It’s not very often when I get to check out units on hot cars. Well, the K40 is well known for making hidden units. They are more known on the market than or with their detectors. Many owners of exotic cars such as Ferraris, Porsches, Lamborghini, and other brands often like to put in the most expensive detectors possible in their cars. After a fun and exciting adventure, here’s what I found with the K40 2000P.

-Price-

*K40 units were never known for having low prices. The K40 2000P is an incredibly pricey unit, and comes out on top of being the most expensive unit and detector currently available on the market. Most people that buy these detectors either have a lot of money, have a lot of money and are afraid of theft, and have a lot of money and bought an expensive car with it. Around the North Shore (Lake County), some of the richest parts around Illinois, you see lots of Porsches, Ferraris, and other expensive cars. I often see Porsches driving on the road, and just about never see a radar detector on the windshield. I think, “Wow, that driver must be an idiot.” However, in the Porsches and Ferraris that I’ve been in, they either have a , Passport , or a much more expensive unit. One such that I found in a Porsche 911 C4 was the K40 2000P. The K40 2000P retails for about $1,300 or so. That’s very expensive. Unlike the older remotes, the K40 2000P actually delivers superb performance. This detector also utilizes a rear-antenna which other units fail to provide. Rear-protection is very important, since you can easily be attacked from the rear, and then that ticket will ruin your day and drastically increase your insurance premiums. So, what’s not to like for the price? Well, on eBay, you can find the top-of-the-line SR7 along with the ZR3 laser going for about $800 or so for both of them. Installation may bring that up to about $1,000, still much less than the K40 2000P without any laser protection. It would be very nice if the K40 2000P had laser detectors/jammers that came with it like the SRX does, or like the SR7 can cheaply be linked to. The new Bel RX75 (Which I am yet to find and use) costs a little over $1k, and also utilizes the highly effective laser jamming modules that’s used in the Bel Laser Pro 904 and ZR3. The K40 2000P can be linked with the K40 Defuser Plus laser jammers which are $300 for a single module. I am yet to use it, but from what people have told me that own it, they say it doesn’t always provide 100% shielding against laser and have gotten tickets. But you don’t need to just stick with K40, other laser jammers pick up laser and jam it as well, and an effective unit can be purchased for around $250 (Bel Laser Pro 904). Well, the one major advantage that the K40 2000P offers compared to the other models is the completely hidden unit. It uses the K40 pods which uses piezo speakers and hidden LEDs to show you the threats. That is something that K40 is well-known for. Good luck to any cop trying to find it! :) The other remotes require the units to be mounted somewhere around the dash. If you’re still concerned about getting tickets, K40 has something to ease the pressure. They have a ticket-guarantee that if you get a speeding ticket withinOverall, you pay a lot of money for the K40 2000P. However, it is the only high-end unit that offers rear-protection.

-Performance-

*Paying over $1,000 obviously won’t get you crap, unless it’s a radar detector. The K40 2000P performs very well. It has very comparable performance to the SRX and SR7 + ZR3 duo. The K40 2000P definitely provides enough time to stop, even if you’re a reckless lead-footed driver! With K-Band, the K40 2000P gave just about as much time as a to slow down. Ka-Band performance was also stellar. Ka-Band is what often can screw over a detector since it’s a large frequency. But the K40 2000P had no trouble, it picked up Ka-Band at a great distance and yet again provided enough time to slow down. Alright, so then it was my turn to plug in the . The is only a fraction of the price of the K40 2000P. With the mounted on the windshield, it picked up K-Band at just about the same time as the K40 2000P did. When it came to Ka-Band, the had a slight edge. Just because you’re paying way more than $400 doesn’t mean the detector is better than a . However, both are completely different units since the is a mounted unit, while the K40 2000P is a . Both do offer excellent rear protection with rear-antennas. One thing that the K40 2000P does that none of the other remotes can really do is get great performance from the rear. I don’t care what RadarTest.com or other people say about detectors having good performance with no rear-antenna. From what I’ve experienced, when a cop is behind me with radar, even with the nicest detectors like the Bel Vector 985, they still have major trouble picking it up. It’s better to have that rear-antenna than to get screwed. Remember, when your insurance premiums go up, they cost way more than the price difference between the K40 2000P and any other high-end unit. So the final performance measure is laser. The K40 2000P does not have built-in laser receivers. This is a major drawback considering laser attacks can be deadly. It needs to be linked to a Defuser Plus to have laser warning and jamming abilities. The SR7 linked with the ZR3 will do something that the K40 2000P can’t. It sends the cop a jam filled donut! So if you’re speeding and hit by lidar with this radar, you’re most likely done for. With a linked , you’ll leave the cop in the dust. The K40 2000P can have mediocre laser protection, but for an extra $299! The K40 Defuser Plus also doesn’t have the same efficiency or both-end protection like the ZR3 and Bel Laser Pro 904 have for a lower price.

-Ease of Use %26 Features-

*The K40 2000P needs to be professionally installed. The K40 2000P is a very high-end unit that is sold through hi-fi car audio joints and other electronics retailers that sell higher-end products. Installation can get very costly, but it’s better to pay a lot and get it installed well rather than having an amateur do it and possibly damage your vehicle. Alright, onto the other stuff! The K40 2000P doesn’t really have any features or anything. It’s a hidden system, so the visual alerts come from small LED pods, and the sound alerts come from a loud piezo speaker. You’re not going to get a cool text display like you do with the SR7 which shows you all of the information that you need to know. So there’s nothing to use about it, it’s bare bones when you think about it. The K40 2000P mutes itself to a low-volume sound like the radar detectors have when they self-mute. This takes away the power from you if you like your alerts going, or muting themselves. Sorry, this is hands-off! So therefore this is probably the easiest radar detector to use since it’s all integrated.

-The Verdict-

*The K40 2000P comes out to being an exceptional unit. Some may think that I gave it too high of a rating based on such a high price compared to any other competition. However, I did this for a reason. You have to look outside of the intial price for the system… You have to look at the future. No radar detection system is 100% fool-proof. I think that it’s very easy to be driving one day and have a cop come up behind you, and nail you with radar. Even if you have a high-end radar (Other than ), you probably won’t know you’re getting hit until you’re already clocked, or unfortunately, after the blue lights come on. So that extra $300 or $400 that you spend on the K40 2000P will be nothing compared to how much you will be spending for your insurance premiums! The largest drawback at the price that I found was the lack of a laser detection/jamming system. However, for an extra $250 or so, you can get a Bel Laser Pro 904 placed in your car which works as a stand-alone system. If you prefer to integrate completely with K40, then you can get the Defuser Plus. The K40 2000P proves to be excellent since it is virtually invisible in the car. So if you drive where detectors are illegal such as Virginia and Washington DC, you should feel a lot better when you’re behind the wheel. Overall, the K40 2000P does exactly what it’s supposed to do, it maybe pricey, but definitely a perfect match for a lead-footed driver with a hot car.
