The Rocky Mountain RMR-D210 is the cheapest detector available in the line-up of Rocky Mountain radar detectors. Most that I found were insanely expensive at going for over $100 in comparison to the performance that they could actually provide. But then I saw the RMR-D210 for about $70 online, and I found someone with a small red sports car. Wow, perfect, this was my chance to see how it would actually perform. Here’s what I found with the RMR-D210.

-Price-

*The RMR-D210 can be found from about $70 to $80. This is considerably cheaper than other radar detectors offered by Rocky Mountain electronics. The sad thing is, with the RMR-D210, you can definitely feel its cheapness. It’s a very small unit, and when you take it off the mount, it looks and feels very brittle. It definitely lacks the construction quality that you’d find from a Whistler DE-1743 or Beltronics Bel Express 910 which sell for almost the same price. In comparison to those radar detectors… Oh wow, haha. That was a joke. The RMR-D210 simply doesn’t compete against them since it lacks their quality of design, features, and most of all, performance. No matter how fantastic Rocky Mountain’s distributors claim the RMR-D210 and other detectors to be, they are still by far the worst on the market. Even at a very low price of around $70, the RMR-D210 still sucks, majorly.

-Performance-

*The RMR-D210 is claimed to have the all-awesome SmartScan. Damn! That must mean that this thing can easily exceed the performance of a Valentine One, Escort Passport 8500 (The popular claim of Rocky Mountain and their products), or just about any other detector on the market! Wrong! When the RMR-D210 was hanging on the windshield, it provided very little warning of police. First off, I can’t tell just how cheaply this radar is built. Put it next to a Whistler DE-1743 or Bel Express 910, and it’ll be the laughing stock of the community. It has just a few little LED lights that are used to show the threat. There’s also no differentiation between K and Ka bands, the same light works for both of the bands. Well, I knew where we were, and I knew what types of radar bands were being used in the areas. So when it came to K-Band, the RMR-D210 provided very little warning. About a second after it went off, I saw a cruiser coming in our direction. With a Whistler DE-1743 or Bel Express 910, you’d have some time to adjust your speed before the cruiser is actually visible on the horizon. As for Ka-Band, the RMR-D210 suffered more. It didn’t begin to beep until we were almost in front of the police cruiser. We would’ve easily been clocked before the detector went off. Also, the speeds of these tests was about 35-40mph. If you’re on the highway, you most likely will have less warning time because of the higher speeds. With SmartScan or not, the Whistler DE-1743 and Bel Express 910 easily trounce it in every aspect.

-Ease of Use %26 Features-

*Wow, this is a very cheap unit. Not cheap as in price (Which I’d say is rather expensive for what you get), but in the construction quality. You receive your warnings from a very cheap LED light display. There are only a few lights that will show you the threat. As the threat increases in strength, the light begins to flash at a more rapid rate. This is a poor way of getting a visual on the signal strength. The sound alerts are horrible. It’s a very tinny and quiet detector. The Bel Express 910 offers much louder alerts. Also, the Whistler DE-1743 is louder, and offers voice alerts too. As for the ease of use, the RMR-D210 doesn’t have any features. It has a button to dim the screen or make it brighter, a mute button, and a City/Highway mode button to switch between the two modes. It’s a bare-bones detector, don’t expect much.

-The Verdict-

*The RMR-D210 is one of the worst devices that I’ve ever used. It’s pretty expensive for what you get. It’s very poor quality in its design and performance. You can do MUCH better with a detector in the same price range from Whistler with the Whistler DE-1743 or the Bel Express 910. But there’s a couple of things that this detector is good for. If you need a neat looking door-stop, then your search is over! It’s a bit costly for one though Also, if you enjoy getting tickets, you just found your match.
