Bel 985 worth its price? Beltronics Vector 985 Radar Detector

Note: This review was written during the summer of 2002 and not published until yesterday, but I still believe this is a pretty accurate review after having almost a year of experience with the 985.

Doesn’t live up to Hype Escort Passport 7500 Radar Detector

Due to life circumstance, I am now making regular trips from New York to Boston. While this is not a long trip, Connecticut is not the most exciting state of the Union. So, with this review, I begin a series of what will, no doubt, become a famous monograph of "On the Road Reviews." I figured I would start out with a review of the device that gets me from NY to MA a little bit faster…my radar detector.

Does the Solo S2 really stack up to the Escort 8500? Escort Passport Solo Radar Detector

There seems to be a lot of debate as to whether or not the cordless S2 delivers the same degree of protection as the or .

(The debate between the and rages on so I won’t address that issue other than to say that currently the edge in reviews ,for good or bad reasons, seems to be going toward the .)

V1, The Porsche of Radar Detectors Valentine One V1 Radar Detector

Like the 911, the has steadily improved over it’s long 15 year history. But it’s changes have come slowly and methodically.

Fortunately for us, Valentine Research has resisted trendy fads that have made their way into lesser detectors (that have come and gone) and instead has stayed absolutely focused on consistently providing the highest levels of detection across all bands of RADAR and all forms of LIDAR.

It is true that Valentine’s competitors have managed to just about equal or exceed [in some cases] its RADAR detection performance, at times, but it has taken more than a decade to do so. Laser detection performance remains the platinum standard.

X Band… Ka Band… SHUT UP!!!! Uniden LRD6599SWS Radar Detector

I had wanted to get a radar detector for quite a while, you see I am what most people call a leadfoot. Nothing extreme mind you, but ticketworthy nonetheless. After sampling the use of a radar detector a friend let me borrow I decided I couldn”t drive without one any more. Soon after that experience I started researching radar detectors. Well, tried to research affordable radar detectors. Sure you”ll spend as much for a as you would a speeding ticket (Southern California tickets do cost this much and more) But then again, the reason you buy one of these is because you can”t afford the ticket. Duh! Well ok back to the huntÂ…

Good Try, Close but No Cigar… Beltronics Pro RX65 Radar Detector

Since there is not much first-hand information available about new Bel radar detector I decided to share my short experience with everyone.

We needed another radar detector for the second car. I’ve been using Passport for a year now (chose it over V1 after careful testing both units) and was more then happy with it - saved my b@tt on several occasions. Love the multiple threat display - works like a spectrum analyzer.

I should hate the Bel 980 Radar Detector! (by a motorcycle cop) Beltronics BEL 980 Radar Detector

I recently retired from a major metropolitan police department, having served in the Traffic Division as a motorcycle sergeant and traffic lieutenant. After 28 years in law enforcement, especially in the radar vs. radar detector end of the business, I”ve learned a few things about both technologies. Speed cops have always found it necessary to learn about the technology designed to defeat their efforts, plus I have a unique perspective from spending years on the display side of the radar unit. Much of what you read on police radar FAQs and websites is totally inaccurate.

Cobra ESD9870 Ultra Performance My… Cobra ESD 9870 Radar Detector

While looking at car electronics at Best Buy, I looked at the radar detector selection. So, what was that right next to the Passport 7500S, it was the ESD-9870 going for an insane $189.99! Well, with such a high price tag, I wondered how this thing would stack up compared to the cheaper ESD models and other detectors in the same price range. So I bought it and rturned it, and here’s what I found with the ESD-9870.

Not quite a Vette….but then some (52601) Escort Passport 8500 Radar Detector

The name has been around for over 20 years. They have dominated the detector market with the Original , Passport, and late 80s . After one of the founders had departed from the company (Mike Valentine) the company hasn’t produced a top-notch detector. Now with the merger (Bought out of ) the company is now back on track with a strong detector.

In the Title not quite a Vette: I would call the Valentine a Vette (factory), the a Camaro (factory), and the Bel 980/970 a Firebird (factory). If you follow cars a Camaro and Firebird are similar with the Frame, Motor and Gauges. The difference is outside appearance and packaging, but give strong performance. The Vette “Valentine” give little more all around performance.
