Radar Detectors

Over the years I have had radar detectors by whistler, Uniden and Cobra. The Beltronics 940 surpasses all previous detectors. I have gotten fewer false signals, greater range and earlier warnings with the 940.

The Beltronics 940 is what I consider a mid-priced detector. It surpasses less expensive detectors as expected. One great aspect though, is that the 940 keeps pace with more expensive detection units. I have a friend with the Beltronics 985 and we ran the detectors simultaniously and we found no real detection advantage of one over the other. Sometimes his 985 picked up the signal first sometimes my 940 was first to the punch. Considering the 985 retails for $100 more, that the 940 keeps pace is really nice. My brother has an Escort. The same test was done with the same results. Considering the Escort is $100 more expensive it is a feather in the 940’s cap to keep up.

After getting a speeding ticket while I was using a Cobra radar detector, I promptly purchased a Whistler DE-1665 Radar Detector several years ago at Best Buy and have been using it ever since–with mixed results.

The unit is solidly made and has taken quite a few beatings from being tossed around and from the hot sun. (I also leave my radar detector in the window continuously) When plugged-in and powered-on, the unit goes through an annoying self-test of all of the LED’s, verbal alerts, and sounds. While it only lasts a few seconds, there should be a way to bypass this completely. Once it’s on–unless the user presses “City”–the unit will sound loudly after every detection from any band/laser. In ‘City’ mode, the unit announces an alert once–but then remains quiet unless the signal becomes closer and stronger or in the case of a lidar (laser) detection.

It’s a little larger than I’m used to in a detector, but it is still workable for a truck or SUV. It has a blue backlit display with a black text LCD. The silver accents and chrome plastic buttons are a nice touch. I purchased this unit from buyradardetectors.com after a semi-favorable review on several sites.

Driving around town, it picks up the X-band signals that my old detector did. It is consistent with signal strength. My route to work and back is identical, and each time the signal strength is similar for the same culprits.

Whistler DE1670 Radar Detection System

Recently I began working in a new area which required me to drive farther to work than I had in previous months. So of course that changed my normal routine, as in going to bed sooner, waking up earlier, watching the sun rise, and finding a little addition to my ride to work. What I found was the Whistler, and let me tell you it works!!
