I had a natural aversion to Bel radar detectors as I had a very unfortunate experience with the Bel 7 series detector - the thing just would not shut-up. Though it did provided some level of comfort from the cops in the radar detector banned land - Ontario, Canada. Finally, fed up with its “talkative” nature, I have bought a K40 - a bit better, but, in general, similar performer, hence, few tickets from local traffic tax collectors posting under cover as police officers. Once I bought my current car, 2000 BMW M5 (see my review), I was in a real need of an upgrade. Therefore, I decided to plunge the whole way and buy Valentine V1. This was a joke - the thing is completely unusable(see my review about it). Then, grudgingly, I’ve decided to trust my $250 to Bel again. The result is a very happy customer - in just one day, it has paid for itself twice.

To me, personally, the radar detector selectivity and sensitivity are the most important factors. you have to trust your detector when it alerts you. Bel 980 is very adaptable for city driving, with a minimal amount of false alerts, which, incidentally, makes it much more effective - you really pay attention when you get a K or Ka band.
