Powerful, but hard to use Beltronics Vector 965 Radar Detector I've used many low end detectors - Whistler, Cobra, Uniden, etc. For several years I used a Beltronics 906. About ...

When my Bel detector(Vector 95) died on me, I decided to go with another brand for my 2nd car. I did not want to invest the $85 that Bel charges for out of warranty repair. So I started comparing and learned that in tests the 1783 performed very well and was rated just a notch below the , Bel 985 and Passport . I did not want to spend the $200-300 that these units normally go far. So I got on E-Bay and picked up the 1783 at a real bargain. I also have a Bel Vector LR or 970 in my primary car and although it will power up and detect radar, it won’t turn off and none of the buttons on the top will work at all. When I got the 1783, I rode around with both units mounted on my window to do some comparison testing. What I found out was that the 1783 is every bit as good as the Bel 970. Both units would detect radar at the same exact instance. One never beat the other, so in my little test they are equal in range detection. I have had so many problems with my Bel detectors that I just don’t trust them anymore. I had sent the 970 back in about a year and a half ago for repair, cost me $85.00. Now it’s screwed up again and I’m not going to sink anymore money into it.

That’s why I decided to go with another brand, and from all my research, the 1783 delivers a lot of bang for the buck. I would have to agree. Whether it will hold up over time is yet to be seen. But I do know that Bels do not.

The 1783 will also detect the new POP mode radar technology which is a big plus, even the will not detect this. It comes with 3 city modes which gives you the ability to eliminate X band completely. This is a must on any radar detector in my opinion. The 1783 also has a battery saver mode that is really nice. This will turn the unit off after 3 hours if you forget to turn it off yourself. So instead of it staying on all night(or several days), it will turn itself off.

Now, what I see are the downsides to the 1783. It is black with the top of it being a silver metallic color. While this makes it very stylish, I believe all radar detectors should be totally black. The silver top of the detector reflects too much sunlight and makes the detector stick out like a sore thumb on my windshield. This just makes it more easy for the cops(and thieves) to see. The mounting bracket is also silver, again reflecting light and making it more easy to see. A detector should be all black making it less conspicuous. My Bels are totally black including the mounting brackets, so they win in that category. Also, the mounting bracket is not adjustable for the angle of your windshield. Luckily my detector was level and straight when I stuck it on the windshield. But I see this as a flaw, you should be able to adjust the angle of it.

Even with these flaws, the 1783 has a lot of nice features and delivers a lot of performance.
