Communication Breakdown Blues
Pros: Compact, reasonable price, nice display features.
Weaknesses: Very unreliable. The “wireless” communication is very sensitive to vehicle electrical noise.
I was unable to make this unit function reliably despite numerous attempts to rewire, filter, etc. I had to pass the display unit’s ground wire through the firewall to connect its ground to the same point as the antenna’s defeating the purpose of the “easy wireless install” and I still get some “communication errors” showing. I also tried installing two ferrites around the antenna’s power leads without success.
I would recommend the PRO3450 hard-wired model or another brand altogether (Escort, Bel, …)
Buy the wired unit
Pros: When it works it works great
Weaknesses: Communication Errors every other time you drive
I have 4 Whistler remotes 2 wired and 2 of these useless wireless units. My friend and I have these units in couple cars and they are the most useless unit on the market. If you can get two or three days in a row with out Communication Errors then you are having better luck them the 2 I have and my friends unit. I sent the one unit back to Whistler for repair because no matter what you did it was Communication Failures , they replaced the power cable tested it and Returned it. This time I did not fully install it I ran the power cables through the door to the constant power under the hood and hooked up the inside unit again. The first part of the trip fine. Stopped for lunch and restarted the car and BINGO Communication Failure. I left the unit in this setup for two weeks to see what happens and the failures are the same totally useless I wish I could trade the three units we have back in for wired units, those units have been bullet proof for years. So take my advice buy the wired unit or spend the extra hundred bills and get the Bel unit and save your self the headache
