Reviews:
Pros: Extremely easy to customize personal settings and understand. Secure loch on the winshield mount.
Weaknesses: None as of this point.
I compared this unit to others in the less than 200.00 price range, and based on the independent tests in 04′decided it was a “best buy” all around. The deep blue read-out is very easy to read, even in bright sunlight, and the voice identification is clear. Just returned from a cross-state trip, and encountered several radar set-up’s.
The Pro 73 preformed at a better than expected level. It was reporting k/ka radar at a Minimum of 1.5 miles at a steady alarm.
I would definitely recommend this unit for the money,,, A great value.
Pros: Multiple Band signals, multiple city modes, easy to read indicator
Weaknesses: Would be nice to have two brackets to switch units to multiple vehicles
So far, I have been very pleased with this product. I have seen/tried other models, but none within this price range have the options that this model provides. Living in a small town, it is nice to have the multiple city options. Also living near many interstates, the POP option is great.
Whistler Pro73 Good Performance at great price - definite best value pick
Pros: Very good filtering capability; great blue LCD looks cool; saves user settings; multiple filter modes; voice alerts easier to listen to; good looking and extremely functional.
Weaknesses: Probably not as sensitive as the Escort 8500, but I have not compared. This works way better than my older Radio Shack and Fox detectors!
The Pro73 was the detector I chose after much research on those with the POP feature. I chose this version based on the blue LCD, and audio alerts. I was able to purchase mine for $125 shipped and that’s a true bagain. I have been using the detector for the past month and really enjoy the filtering that it has. Not many false alarms at all. For a detector at $125, it can’t be beat in my opinion. I have previously owned Bel, Radio Shack, and Fox detectors and the filtering on this Whistler unit is way better!!! Now need to buy another for the wife!
Pro 73
Pros: Has great K band and Laser detection. Easy to use . The other opions I have not used.
Weaknesses: Its not very good around sharp or long corners or on hilly terrains depending on where you are. Ka band is not that good unless you are on the Highway with not many curves or hills.
The detection on K band is very good for the price I never had a close call yet. Ka band is good if your on flat areas but when hills and curves come in to play the detection deceases and is not that good but it does have good range if your on a fairly flat area. I like the detector I think Its great for the money. I had A Rockey Mountian RMR DSL312 and this Whistler pro 73 I WAY BETTER. You just have to be careful with it around sharp corners and steep hills. You will get to know how it works and you will like it.On some areas Its hilly and turney and it works not bad I depends on the area you are in. I dont think you will find any better radar in this price range. If I was going to buy another radar I would buy the more expensive ones. But if you cant aford the best of the best This pro 73 is probley you best bet.
Pros: Has many features, easy to set personal settings, Great voice alert system.
Weaknesses: none found yet.
(Edited June 04th by ringodude) A lot of features for the money paid. Well built and good looking. In two days I have been alerted three times for radar set ups and had plenty of time to respond. Highly reccomend this product to anyone looking for an under $200 detector.
Whistler Pro 73/Good Value
Pros: Early warning.
Weaknesses: Instructions and set-up.
Would advise purcahse of the product. Very early detection and minimal false alarms. The pick-up of K and Ka is very early, no laser hits so far. Very few false alarms so far. Longer warranty than the Cobra. The set-up is a little complicated and the instructions could be improved.
Pros: Detects all forms of radar including POP and Laser, has VG2 feature, simple to use and operate, many features and benefits, love the blue LED display!, an excellent value for the price
Weaknesses: A bit larger than I would like, does not have an exit feature from the menu, is detectable to Spectre use and technology, did not come with a coiled power cord
(Edited September 28th by highexplorer) I would highly recommend this radar detector for anyone looking for a radar detector that costs less than $150.00 or even $200.00. The blue LED is great. The features, benefits and ease of use and operation is very good. The only pitfalls would be that it is detectable to Spectre use/technology, it is a little bulky in my opinion, it didn’t come with a coiled power cord - which I personally prefer, and I haven’t found a way to exit from the menu without using the 20 second time out. All in all, I would give it a best buy for the price and believe that it would fair well against much more expensive radar detectors.
Pros: Awesome price, sleek look, great detection of signals, City modes as well as Highway mode
Weaknesses: None that I have found
(Edited July 28th by TeABaG_) I was torn between purchasing the Cobra XRS 9700 and the Whistler PRO73. In the end I went with the Whistler and I am not disappointed at all! It performs great and has a cool blue led display. It is somewhat customizeable and has some really cool features with it. I definetly reccomend this to someone who wants a great radar detector but is looking in the sub $200 range. In my opinion this is the best radar detector that you can buy under $200.
Whistler PRO
Pros: Very good at doing what it was intended to do.
Weaknesses: Has some functions that are a bit worthless.
It takes some time to learn how to use the buttons. Don’t laugh, its tricky! Several buttons have a duel use. If you let go too soon, you will be in a mode you don’t want. Takes practice.
The following modes or functions I can do without:
1)VG-2 (useless where I live) Turn-off
2)SWS (drove halfway across the US and never found one) Turn-off
3)Stay Alert (who is responsible for this useless piece of crap?) Never, ever use.
4)Pop mode (not used locally and never ran into one) Turn-off for home, on for highway
Now the good stuff:
This detector does indeed find radar. Unfortunately, with the advent of instant-on radar, you need to be very careful. You will detect it, but it might be too late. Yes, it will detect a K-band at over 2 miles. But unless you are in South Dakota, you may never see this. It’s rare for LEOs to flood a roadway any great distance with radar.
X-band is easy to turn off for city use. This eliminates most (not all) false alarms. This unit does detect the 2nd harmonic from X-band emitters, giving a K-band alert. Nothing much you can do about that. Even the overpriced detectors will do this. I do recommend leaving the X-band turned on when traveling in unknown areas. (I found Montana State Troopers use both X and K-band. So do some South Dakota LEOs.) Just turn the auto-quiet on so as not to be annoyed.
K and Ka-band are the most used radar frequencies. This detector really shines here. It’s more than adequate for the job.
Pros: NA
Weaknesses: NA
I THINK ITS THE BEST BUY FOR THE DOLLARS. I HAVE BEEN VERY HAPPY WITH ITS PERFORMANCE. WORKS WELL IN THE MOUNTAINS AND AROUND CURVES.
Pros: Great display, clear voice. I do not yet know how far it will detect as I have yet to pass an active radar.
Weaknesses: None yet
I like the looks and sound of the new detector. It has a positive mounting lock, sounds great, and has a great feature to ensure that you don’t fall asleep on a long trip. You must read the book to know how to access all the features, but it is very easy to follow. I will update this review if I can once I have encountered an active radar or lasar. I have received VG2 alerts and I could not identify their source.
